Second and third graders in Miss Chin, Mr. Gleason, Miss Pugliese, and Miss Kirner’s classes had the unique opportunity to participate in a unit of study called KOALA (Kids Occupational Advanced Learning Association) University. In this School-Wide Enrichment Model based unit, the students had the chance to have a preview into four potential career studies. Students rotated through four “courses,” which lasted three sessions per course. The students learned about the fields of business, marketing, arts, and engineering. After learning about the four fields, students “applied” for a “job” in the field of their choice. Students will then rotate weekly to participate in a real-life career based experience where they will be applying their knowledge of their field to complete tasks related to a fully functioning coffee shop business here at Oak Tree. The coffee shop will sell and distribute coffee to teachers and staff at Oak Tree on a weekly basis. In this way, the students will have the opportunity to experience the career field of their choice through the lens of a real business. .
